Lion Monument

The Lion Monument⭐, or the Lion of Lucerne, is a rock relief in Lucerne, Switzerland. It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris. It is one of the most famous monuments in Switzerland, visited annually by about 1.4 million tourists.

Mark Twain praised the sculpture of a mortally-wounded lion as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.

Glacier Garden of Lucerne

Glacier Garden is nature's own monument to history and an oasis of peace from busy Lucerne's life. Potholes of impressive proportions bear witness to the last ice age and to the fact that Lucerne was once covered by glaciers. Conversely, fossilized mussels and palm leaves found in local rock strata indicate that some 20 million years ago, the area of Lucerne was a subtropical beach!

On June 28, 2019, we started our day at the lakeshore and walked from the Church of St. Leodegar to the Lion Monument. We then visited the nearby Glacier Garden of Lucerne. We spent about two to three hours on the entire trip.
