Villa Carlotta: A Feast for the Senses

Villa Carlotta ⭐⭐is located in the town of Tremezzina, on the western shore of Lake Como. It is easily accessible by ferry from other towns on the lake, or by bus from Como. The villa itself is a beautiful example of neoclassical architecture, and the gardens are simply stunning.

In addition to the gardens, the villa itself is also open to the public. The interior is beautifully decorated, and there is a small museum with a collection of paintings and sculptures.

On a sunny October day in 2023, I hiked from Villa del Balbianello to Villa Carlotta, a scenic lakeside trail that took about an hour and fifteen minutes.

A Villa Steeped in History

In the guestbooks of Villa Carlotta the names of artists active in the 19th century frequently recur, mainly painters but also sulptors and photographers.

Of particular note are the signatures of:
  • Guiuseppe Bisi (1787-1869), author of the view of the Villa commissioned by Giovanni Battista Sommariva
  • Eliseo Sala (1813-1879), who painted the portrait of the young Count Emilio Sommariva commisioned by Elilia Seillier.
Today both works are preserved in the collections of Villa Carlotta.
