5 Spectacular Gardens

With the craggy Alps for a backdrop, a unique microclimate where topical plants thrive, and a long history of lavish summer estates, Lake Como is surrounded by some of Italy’s most beautiful gardens.[6]
Lush foliage and brilliant flowers frame views across the lake to peaks that stay snow-capped well into summer. The shore rises steeply, so gardens cascade above the water, and descend in terraces decorated by statues and fountains.

Here are the 5 spectacular gardens:

  • Villa Carlotta ()
    • The villa is located at the top of a terraced garden, from which there are views of Bellagio and also the mountains surrounding the lake. It consists of three floors (two of which are open to the public). The works of art on display are mainly located on the lower floor, while the upper one, which has an elegant gallery, provides views over the lake.
  • Villa Balbianello ()
  • Villa Serbelloni
    • The Parco di Villa Serbelloni is a stunning 50-acre natural park that covers almost the entire promontory of Bellagio. From the park, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Bellagio and discover the fascinating history of this almost magical place.
    • Guided Tour of Park Villa Serbelloni (EUR10,00)
  • Villa Melzi d’Eril
    • The gardens of Villa Melzi d’Eril were designed in 1808 in an open and uncluttered style, with only occasional statues to decorate the landscape. Hidden among the trees are a Japanese garden and a water garden. A Moorish-style pavilion overlooks the lake, surrounded by cypresses, Michoacan pine trees (Pinus devoniana), and dwarf palms (Chamaerops humilis).
  • Villa Monastero ()
    • Villa Monastero is famous for its beautiful botanical garden, which is home to over 800 different species of plants from all over the world.
    • The garden is divided into different sections, each with its own unique theme. There is a rose garden, a Japanese garden, an alpine garden, and a Mediterranean garden. There is also a section of the garden dedicated to medicinal plants.
    • The villa itself is also worth seeing. It is a beautiful example of Italian architecture, with a mix of Gothic and Renaissance elements. The villa was built in the 12th century, and it has been owned by a number of different families over the years.
    • Today, Villa Monastero is a public park and museum. It is open to the public from April to October.
To avoid the crowds in the most popular towns in Lake Como, the best times to visit are early in the morning (before 10am) or later in the afternoon (after 3-4pm). The afternoon is generally better, as the crowds will have thinned out by then.  Attractions labeled withare recommended to be booked in advance.
