Kaleiçi: Antalya's Labyrinth of History and Charm

View of snow mountains from Ekici Restaurant

The Kaleiçi area ⭐⭐ lies in the central-eastern portion of Antalya along the Mediterranean coast, fronted by a yacht harbor that dates back to the Roman era. The name Kaleiçi translates to “Inside the Kale” or “Inner Kale,” with Kale itself meaning “castle” or “fortress.” According to the TÜİK Institute of Statistics, as of October 2022, approximately 120,000 foreigners reside in the city.

Kaleiçi, with its narrow-cobbled streets and historic Ottoman-era houses, is the old center of Antalya. Restored to preserve much of its historical character, the district now features hotels, bars, clubs, restaurants, and shops.

The area is enclosed by two walls, one of which runs along the seafront. These fortifications were built over centuries, from the Hellenistic period through the Ottoman. The historic harbor is located here, with winding streets extending from the waterfront and branching into the old city, lined with traditional wooden houses.

Hadrian's Gate

Hadrian's Gate (Turkish: Üçkapılar, meaning "The Three Gates") is a triumphal arch, which was built in the name of the Roman emperor Hadrian, who visited Antalya in the year AD 130. It is the only remaining entrance gate in the walls that surround the city and harbor.
