Hakone, part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, is a very popular destination among Tokyoites, as well as tourists, for its gorgeous scenery around the Mount Fuji (for instance, the Ashi lakes and Owakudani), its many onsens and vacation resorts.

Hakone (箱根) is one of the most popular onsen ⭐⭐(hot spring) towns and has a history of 1200 years. Visitors can enjoy a hot spring bath in public bath houses or ryokan. Many ryokan open their baths not only to staying guests but also to daytime visitors. While staying guests can use the baths for free, daytime visitors pay an admission fee of typically between ¥500 and ¥2000.

          Both the men’s and women’s open-air baths offer a spectacular view of Mt. Fuji. The view from the women’s open-air bath is especially stunning.  To access the hotel, you can take either Hakone Ropeway or Bus.

          Hakone Yuryo (箱根湯寮)


          Hakone Yuryo is a tasteful public bath opened in spring 2013 on the former site of the Hakone Begonia Garden. The facility features gender segregated indoor and outdoor baths with nice views into the forest. There is also a large selection of private baths (additional fees apply) for families and couples that wish to bath together. A free shuttle bus operates every 10-15 minutes to/from Hakone Yumoto Station.

          Tenzan (天山湯治郷)


          Collection of nicely done hot spring pools, most of which are outdoors at the foot of a wooded slope. The bath house is a beautiful traditional Japanese style building. A short walk from Oku-Yumoto Iriguchi bus stop (bus line K).

          Reaching Hakone from Tokyo's Haneda Airport (HND)

          Hakone (箱根) is one of the most popular onsen (hot spring) towns and has a history of 1200 years. Visitors can enjoy a hot spring bath in public bath houses or ryokan. Many ryokan open their baths not only to staying guests but also to daytime visitors (日帰り). While staying guests can use the baths for free, daytime visitors pay an admission fee of typically between ¥500 and ¥2000.

          In this article,we will cover how to access Hakone from Haneda Airport  (HND).

          Haneda Airport (HND)


          Based on 2017 statistics, Haneda Airport is the 4th busiest airport in the world.[15] Why?  Because it's the International Airport (vs Narita Airport) closest to central Tokyo.

          To visit Hakone from abroad, it could be a better choice because its south location of Tokyo if you can manage avoiding passing through central Tokyo.

          Reaching your destination from Haneda Airport is easy with three public transportation options:
          1. Keikyū Airport Line (京急空港線 Keikyū Kūkō-sen): The Keikyu Airport Line is a 6.5 km (4.0 mi) commuter line operated by the private railway operator Keikyu.
          2. Haneda Airport Limousine Bus: Enjoy a comfortable and direct ride to various locations.
          3. Tokyo Monorail (northbound only): This monorail travels north towards central Tokyo.

          Keikyū Airport Line connects Keikyu Kamata with Haneda Airport International Terminal Station, and has Airport Express (エアポート急行), Limited Express (特急, 快特) and Airport Limited Express (エアポート快特) services, virtually all of which continue along the Keikyu Main Line either north to Shinagawa Station (note that Shinagawa station is one of the busiest stations in Tokyo; watch this video) , or south to Yokohama Station (see above diagram)

          Access Hakone from HND


          To access Hakone (箱根町) from HND, there are two main routes:
          1. Haneda Airport → Shinagawa Station → Odawara Station 
          2. Haneda Airport → Yokohama Station → Odawara Station 
          Both routes 1&2 need to reach Odawara Station (小田原駅) first.  However, route 1 travel to Odawara via Shinagawa Station (品川駅) and route 2 via Yokohama Station (横浜駅).

          Haneda Airport (羽田空港) → Shinagawa Station (品川駅) → Odawara Station (田原站)

          From Haneda Airport to Shinagawa Station:
          • Serviced by Keikyu-Kuko Line (京浜急行電鉄) エアポート快特
          • Travel time: 11 mins

          Haneda Airport (羽田空港) → Yokohama Station (横浜駅) → Odawara (田原站)

          From Haneda Airport to Yokohama Station, there are two options:
          • Serviced by Keikyu-Kuko Line (京浜急行電鉄) エアポート快特
          • Haneda Airport Limousine [Yokohama] 
            • Travel time: 54min (Transfer:0)
            • Stops: Terminal 3→ 2 →1→Yokohama City Air Terminal
            • Ticket: 650 yen

          From Yokohama Station to Odawara Station:
          • Serviced by Acty (a commute train used be called Shonan Line)for ATAMI (熱海)
          • Travel time: 46 mins

          Access Yumoto from Odawara


          Yumoto (湯本), at the entrance to the Hakone area near Odawara, is Hakone's most famous hot spring with a particularly long history, high quality water and numerous baths and inns. Many more hot spring facilities are found across the hills and valleys of Hakone and along the shores of Lake Ashi.

          Hakone public transportation is mainly serviced by Odakyu.  with its Hakone Tozan Line.  You can use its interactive route finding online tool here.  For example, select "Odawara" in the Departure and "Hakone-Yumoto" in the Arrival fields.  It will show you:

          Access Ryokans from Yumoto 


          Staying at a traditional ryokan near Hakone Yumoto? Take advantage of the convenient shuttle bus service offered by Hakone Yumoto Onsen Ryokan (箱根湯本温泉旅館送迎シャトルバス). For just ¥200 (as of April 1, 2024), this shuttle can whisk you away to your ryokan's doorstep (please note the website is in Japanese, but Google Translate can be helpful).
