Porto is a compact, walkable city, but its public transportation system (buses, metro, trams, and funiculars) is efficient and comprehensive.

Modes of Transportation

1. Metro
  • Features: Modern, mostly surface-level (tram-like). Six operational lines (A–F).
  • Key Lines & Stations:
    • Yellow Line (D): Connects the center across the Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia; ideal for sightseeing.
    • Purple Line (E): Runs directly to/from the airport.
    • Trindade Station: The central hub where all lines intersect.
    • Hours: Daily from 6:00 AM to 1:00 AM.
  • Tip: Check the train’s destination before boarding, as multiple lines share the same tracks.

2. Buses (Autocarros)

  • Useful for areas not reached by the metro (e.g., Palácio de Cristal) and scenic routes like the 500 line.
  • Validate your card upon boarding.

3. Trams (Elétricos)
  • Primarily tourist attractions rather than daily transit; operated by Porto Tram City Tour.
  • Main Routes: Line 1 (Marginal) and Line 18 (Restauração), both running along the river toward Foz do Douro.
  • Cost: Single ticket is €5; return ticket is €7. Lines are often crowded.
4. Funicular dos Guindais
  • Connects the riverside (Ribeira) to the hilltop (Batalha).
  • Costs €2.50 per adult for a single trip.
5. Taxis & Ridesharing (TVDE)
  • Taxis use meters; rideshare apps (Uber and Bolt) are widely available and show upfront pricing.

Important Transfers

Traveling from Porto Campanhã to the City Center

Porto Campanhã (Estação de Campanhã) is Porto's primary railway hub for long-distance and high-speed trains (e.g., from Lisbon or Spain). It is located slightly east of the city center, and you can reach central Porto in a few minutes:
  • By Suburban Train (To São Bento Station - Most Popular):
    • If your destination is the historic heart of Porto, take a quick 4-minute urban connecting train (Urbano) from Campanhã to São Bento Station.
    • Bonus: If you already hold an Alfa Pendular or Intercidades long-distance train ticket to Campanhã, this short connecting transfer to São Bento is usually included for free.
  • By Metro:
    • Campanhã is directly connected to the metro network.
    • Lines A (Blue), B (Red), C (Green), and F (Orange) all run from Campanhã directly to Trindade Station (the central interchange) in under 8 minutes.
    • Requires a standard Z2 Andante ticket (or transfer credit).
  • By Rideshare / Taxi:
    • Uber, Bolt, or traditional taxis take around 10–15 minutes depending on central traffic.
Airport Transfer (Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport - OPO)
  • Location: 12 km from the city center; single-terminal airport.
  • Best Option: Metro Line E (Purple) directly to Trindade Station.
  • Other Options: Taxis, Uber/Bolt, or buses (buses take longer for the same price as the metro).

Ticketing: The Andante Card

General Rules
  • Format: Reusable, fragile paper-electronic card costing €0.60.
  • Usage: Individual (cannot be shared). Children under 4 travel free.
  • Validation: Must tap the card at a reader before boarding (at station entrances for the metro, on board for buses). Tapping off when exiting is not required.
Zones & Transfers
  • Z2 (2 Zones): Covers travel within Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia (including Campanhã to center; allows 1-hour unlimited transfers).
  • Z3 (3 Zones): Required for trips to Matosinhos.
  • Z4 (4 Zones): Required for transit between the Airport and City Center (allows 1 hr 15 min of transfers).
  • Passes: 24-hour unlimited passes are available (e.g., Z2 is €5.35).
Buying & Reloading
  • At Ticket Machines: Select English → Choose Single Ticket or 24-Hour Pass → Select Zone level (Z4 for airport, Z2 for inner city/Campanhã).
  • Bulk Discount: Buying 10 single tickets awards 1 extra ticket free (11 total).
  • Crucial Reload Warning: When topping up an airport-purchased card in the city, tap "Change type of title" to switch from Z4 to Z2, otherwise you will accidentally overpay for unused 4-zone tickets.

This is a passageway leading to Nankai-Namba Station. Be aware that underground passages in Japan can be quite complex for visitors. When you arrive at Kansai International Airport (symbol: KIX) and try to reach your destinations via trains, sometimes you need to make connections at Namba Station (see Fig. 2). Namba Station is one of the main connection points (the other two are Umeda and Tennoji Stations).
