How to Get to Shimabara 


1. Ferry from Kumamoto (Most Popular & Scenic)
  • Crosses Ariake Bay directly to Shimabara Port.
  • Kyusho Ferry: ~60 min, many daily departures, ¥1,000–2,000.
  • Kumamoto Ferry “Ocean Arrow”: ~30 min high‑speed option.
  • Access: From Kumamoto Station, take a tram/bus to Kumamoto Port (30–40 min).
  • Arrival: Shimabara Port is close to the city center—walk or take a short bus/train.
  • Great sea views and, on clear days, Mt. Unzen.
2. Train from Nagasaki
  • From Nagasaki Station → Isahaya by JR (8–30 min depending on train).
  • Transfer to the Shimabara Railway to Shimabara (70–80 min, ¥1,460).
  • Total: ~2–2.5 hours, ¥2,000–3,000.
  • Scenic coastal ride with views of Ariake Sea and Mt. Unzen.
