Stepping into Serenity: A Day at Ginkaku-ji's Silver Pavilion and Gardens

Ginkaku-ji: A Zen Oasis in Kyoto's Heart (YouTube link)

Ginkakuji Temple and the Quintessence of Zen Aesthetics

Built in the 15th century as a retirement home for a powerful shogun, Ginkakuji Temple (Silver Pavilion / 銀閣寺) later became a peaceful Zen temple. The iconic Silver Pavilion reflects on a calm pond, though it never received its planned silver coating. Moss-covered paths and a sand garden designed like Mount Fuji create a serene atmosphere. More than just a temple, Ginkakuji embodies the Higashiyama Culture's appreciation for natural imperfections and Zen principles.

Take a look at these photos that capture the beauty of Ginkakuji on a bright early summer day, May 11th, 2023. This trip was a change from my visit during the autumn colors period (see article here).
