Barcelona Travel―Visiting Abbey of Montserrat

Abbey of Montserrat viewed from the top of mountain

Santa Maria de Montserratbest of the area is an abbey of the Order of Saint Benedict located on the mountain of Montserrat in Catalonia, Spain. It is notable for enshrining the image of the Virgin of Montserrat. The monastery was founded in the 11th century and rebuilt between the 19th and 20th centuries, and still functions to this day, with over 70 monks.

The Escolania, Montserrat’s Boys’ Choir, is one of the oldest in Europe and performs during religious ceremonies and communal prayers in the basilica.  The basilica houses a museum with works of art by many prominent painters.

The monastery is 48 kilometers (30 mi) northwest of Barcelona.  There is no easy access from Barcelona to the monastery by pubic transportation.  The best way is to join any tour that will bring you up there.  If you want to enjoy Montserrat's Boys' Choir in the basilica, you need to stay there for at least 4-6 hours.  See [2] for the regular performance hours of the choir.  For example, if you join the half-day morning tour, you won't make it.

Below photos were taken on 12/19/2019 by joining a full-day tour provided by Explore Catalunya.
